The check syntax button () when clicked will check the syntax of the currently displayed question enabling the question designer to correct any errors of syntax before moving on to the next question.

In the example below, an internal, machine question of the Function question-type (designated by the adjacent button with an "F" in it) has had its syntax checked and the resultant message informs the user that the syntax is correct.
